INTRODUCTION:
JESUS BEATS SATAN
This art motif centers around the following bible text:
Mark, Chapter 1, verse 12+13:
‘And immediately the spirit driveth him into the wilderness and he was there in the wilderness forty days tempted by satan and was with the wild beasts and the angels ministered unto him.’
Similarly in Mathews 4, 1-11 with three temptations mentioned, and Luke 4, 1-13.
Artists visualizing these quotations capture the following 7 motifs
(with reference numbers of the ICONCLASS system):
Temptation of Jesus in the desert (ICONCLASS 73 C 2)
(Mt.4:1-11; Mk. 1:12-13; Lk. 4:1-13)
Motif # 1: Jesus in the desert (ICONCLASS 73C21)
Jesus tempted by Satan three times (ICONCLASS 73C22):
Motif # 2: ‘command these stones to become bread’
(ICONCLASS 73C221)
Motif # 3: ‘throw yourself down’
(from the temple)
(ICONCLASS 73C222)
Motif # 4: ‘all these will I give you’
(= the glory of the world),
Jesus with Satan on a mountain top (ICONCLASS 73C223)
Motif # 5: Satan withdrawing from Jesus (ICONCLASS 73C23)
Motif # 6: Jesus ministered by angels (ICONCLASS 73C24)
Motif # 7: Jesus blessing the angels (ICONCLASS 73C241).
Please, pay attention!
Our search results as of 2 January 2003: about 600 works of art discovered!
We know of a further 100 works of art from literature references but we have
no color pictures of them. Please, ask for our search list and take a picture
for us!
Apart from that there are still thousands of works of art on the walls
and in the windows of churches, museums and galleries just waiting to be discovered.
The problem is we don’t know where they are! If you locate a piece,
please, get in touch with the art club! We may ask you to send us a color
slide!

SEARCH LIST (Suchliste), updated: JULY 2006
We discovered the subsequent items in the literature but have
been unable to get color images for the private picture collection of the
Art Club Jesus Overcomes.
We need a color picture (e.g. slide) of them.
In some cases we have black and white pictures, in most cases nothing at all.
Thus, we appreciate if you would try to get these color pictures eather by
searching the internet (contact to church persons etc.) or travelling to these
places. Before you invest any money in securing the color imagery, get in
touch with us, so that we can prevent any crossover of funding.
In case you are going to investigate a tough case, for instance from the Vatican
libraries, please get in touch with us so that we can send you additional
material from our files.
Don't limit your search to the tough cases listed below: There are 1000 additional

sechs Engel bringen ihm in grossen silbernen Schuesseln alle Arten von Zuckerwerk;
